Neuromuscular & Myofascial Therapy
Service Description
Neuromuscular therapy is a style of massage that addresses soft tissue dysfunction by affecting the neurological mechanisms that control the muscles. The body is wonderfully adaptive at compensating for the physical stresses it undergoes by undergoing neuromuscular changes, many of which result in reduced mobility, pain, fatigue, and chronic muscle tension. NMT techniques are highly-specialized and aim to correct these pain and movement dysfunctions by treating trigger points, muscle adhesions, and connective tissue patterns. It is often used in conjunction with myofascial release to reduce or eliminate pain, increase flexibility and strength, improve posture and efficiency of movement, and overall balance the musculoskeletal and neurological systems. Myofascial release attempts to release tension in the fascia due to trauma, posture, or inflammation. Connective tissues called fascia surround the muscles, bones, nerves, and organs of the body. Points of restriction, often called "trigger points," in the fascia can place a great deal of pressure on nerves and muscles causing chronic pain. MFR uses gentle stretching to elongate the fascia in order to relieve pain, increase blood circulation, and restore the connective tissue's natural elasticity. It is often used in conjunction with neuromuscular therapy to warm up and ease the fascia before releasing the trigger points themselves.
